The leading games and human-computer interaction conference CHI PLAY will publish an academic study about the world’s first two player game on trampolines today.
Super Stomp is a game for the trampoline game platform ValoJump and is made by a Finnish game company Valo Motion. The academic study was organized together with Aalto university from Finland.
The academic study will explain how the game gives the players an empowering experience using custom computer vision, movement exaggeration and game design techniques. It exaggerates the virtual jumps while preserving precise control of the game characters. This can make the player feel like a superhero within the game world. The study showed that people had a lot of fun playing Super Stomp.
The study also revealed that the game scores very high on psychological measures of physical activity motivation and enjoyment. Games like Super Stomp can tick all the boxes for making the player feel motivated to exercise.
Valo Motion’s Super Stomp trampoline game will be presented at the international CHI PLAY game research conference. CHI PLAY is the international and interdisciplinary conference (by ACM SIGCHI) for researchers and professionals across all areas of play, games and human-computer interaction (HCI). The conference will take place between the 22nd and 25th October 2019 in Barcelona, Spain.
This paper was not the first academic study about Valo Motion’s games published by CHI. CHI published a study about the augmented climbing wall game platform ValoClimb in the 2016 CHI Conference.
There has been several academic papers written about Valo Motion’s products based on the postdoctoral research of Valo Motion’s CEO Dr Raine Kajastila. This research has helped Valo Motion to create products that are loved all over the world. Some of the research topics have included how can technology be used to motivate people to move or learn skills in sports. Some of the studies also researched the feasibility of interaction or safety in augmented reality exergaming products.
Although ValoClimb and ValoJump are now both commercial products, Valo Motion continues to collaborate with Aalto University in doing research studies for their games. These academic studies are used to validate the products’ usability, safety and fun factor.
The creator of sports and games of the future, Valo Motion from Finland, launched Super Stomp trampoline game earlier this year. Super Stomp is a game and exercise innovation. For the first time, two trampolinists can play and interact together safely, each on their own trampoline while still appearing together in the game’s virtual world. Super Stomp became an instant hit since it was first launched only 8 short months ago. Today, an average Super Stomp unit is in excellent use, with about 1328 games played per day.
